Behind the Mask Opening Reception

At 1628 Ltd. we exist to surround our members with service and support as they pursue their ventures.  We believe that being surrounded by evocative images inspires people to do their best work. As such, the 1628 physical environment is wrapped in art, rotated quarterly, to create an atmosphere in which people want to do their best work and be their best selves.

The artwork in our fall exhibit, Behind the Mask: Contemporary Portraiture and the Pursuit of SelfSelect Photographic Works from the Collection of Linda and George Kurz, uses the medium of photography to create a conversation about the person being viewed and characterized in the image. The artists featured in the show are intentionally trying to challenge the viewer to feel and see the raw authenticity of each subject and what they are feeling at the moment, whether they are content or despondent. The artists expose life as we don’t often see it. Each image has its own story and the true beauty of it all comes from celebrating the imperfections that may not align with society’s norms.

“There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough - there has to be a vision, and the two together can make a good photograph.” Robert Frank
